Meet the Board of Managers of GoodWorks Insurance. They believed there was a way to build a business and enrich the community at the same time — and designed the first-of-its-kind GoodWorks Insurance agency network. These are a few of the people who make GoodWorks Insurance work for our customers, communities, employee partners, business partners, investors, and other stakeholders.
Dong H. Ahn
Investor, Insurance Executive

A 25-year veteran of the insurance industry, Dong began his career at The Travelers Insurance Company and served in a variety of management positions. In 1995, he joined The Hartford Life Insurance Company as Senior Vice President and Director of the Employer Market segment in the Group Benefits Division.

In 2002, Mr. Ahn joined Aetna as Executive Director of Aetna Group Insurance, directing the development of a segment-driven, growth strategy for the unit. He was later named Senior Vice President and Head of the Group Insurance Business. Beginning in 2005, Dong was in the Global Benefits segment of Aetna. Dong retired from Aetna in late 2005 and is actively looking at investments in China and Southeast Asia.

Mr. Ahn also serves on the Board of Directors of the Governor's Prevention Partnership and the Junior Achievement of Southwest New England, Inc. He is a graduate of Yale University, with dual degrees in economics and political science.

Peter M. Gay, CPA, CPCU
Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer, GoodWorks Insurance, LLC

Mr. Gay brings to GoodWorks Insurance a wealth of insurance agency management experience. Among his past positions, Peter served as the operations manager of a successful $3+ million independent insurance agency with 4 locations where, among other things, he was responsible for all aspects of day-to-day back office operations.

Mr. Gay also has extensive corporate-side experience. He served as Manager at Travelers Property/Casualty after its acquisition of Aetna. For 17 years prior to the Travelers' acquisition, he was the Agency Manager for Aetna Property & Casualty Financial Services, Marketing, where he managed a $100 million loan fund providing loan underwriting, producer financing, ad hoc short-term loans, and quasi-consulting for independent agents.

Peter holds a variety of professional insurance designations including a Licensed Producer of Property/Casualty Insurance in both Massachusetts and Connecticut and a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU). He is also a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and was formerly a Staff Auditor with a regional CPA firm in Hartford, Connecticut.

Mr. Gay holds dual degrees: a BS degree in Economics from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and a BA degree in Accounting from Western New England College. He also served as a U.S. Air Force Captain/Navigator in Vietnam.

Joseph L. Grochmal
Chairman of the Board of Managers,
President and Chief Executive Officer, GoodWorks Insurance, LLC

Mr. Grochmal is the innovator behind GoodWorks Insurance. He developed the business strategy for the company and filed the business method patent for the GIFT Marketing System, patent pending, utilized by GoodWorks Insurance.

In addition to his work with GoodWorks Insurance, Mr. Grochmal is also a member of the Board of Managers of Schupp & Grochmal LLC, where he formed and structured a unique $300 million venture capital fund. Prior to that, he was a member of the Board of Directors, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of The Covenant Group, Inc., a business utilizing a novel strategy based in part on the acquisition of independent insurance agencies.

In addition, Joe was a Founder of Northington Partners, Inc., a specialty investment bank focused on the insurance industry. There, he was integral to the creation of the Connecticut Insurance Reinvestment Act, which encouraged insurance industry employment in the State of Connecticut. At the beginning of his business career, he also served as Vice President, Corporate Finance and Institutional Equity Analyst at Conning & Company, a New York Stock Exchange insurance research boutique, where, among other things, Joe was responsible for the $5.2 billion acquisition of Farmers Group by B.A.T. Industries.

Mr. Grochmal has served and/or presently serves on various boards. He received a B.A. in Mathematics and Economics from Amherst College in 1981.

Robert W. Norris
Philanthropist, Educator

Mr. Norris currently serves as Chairman and President of Berkshire South Regional Community Center, as the Chairman of the Lennox Foundation, as Treasurer of WAMC Public Radio in Albany, as Treasurer of Sunbridge College in Spring Valley, NY, as Treasurer of the NOAH Center in Great Barrington, MA (a resource center for alternative healing) and as a Board Member of Construct (an educational and financial assistance program for homeless people).

For 17 years, from 1981 to 1998, Bob was a classroom teacher at the Great Barrington Rudolf Steiner School and served on the Board and various committees of the school.

Prior to 1981, Mr. Norris was engaged overseas as an educational consultant and part-owner of Provent AB, a distributor for Lennox International in Gothenburg, Sweden. He worked for IMTEC, International Management Training for Educational Change, from 1973 to 1976, and for the National Program of Education Leadership from 1971 to 1973. Prior to 1971, he was employed by Lennox International, Inc. both in Europe and the US.

Bob speaks Norwegian, Swedish and some German.

Prior to starting with Lennox in 1965, Mr. Norris worked for the Ford Foundation for 2 years in Africa as an MIT Fellow. He graduated from MIT in 1963 with a MSC in Industrial Management, and from Grinnell College in 1960 with a degree in Economics.

David A. Schupp
Chairman, Schupp & Grochmal, LLC

Mr. Schupp is a highly successful entrepreneur and knowledgeable insurance industry analyst. He is a Founder of Noble View, LLC, Schupp & Grochmal, LLC, The Townsend & Schupp Company, Townsend & Schupp Capital Markets, Inc., Fox-Pitt, Kelton, Inc., Trenwick Group, Executive Risk Insurance, Industrial Health Care Company, Hettrick & Cyr, Insurance ReInventions and MeadowBrook Center, Inc. nursing home.

In addition to founding successful companies, Dave's experience includes 18 years as a general partner of Conning & Company, a New York Stock Exchange insurance research boutique, 10 years with The Townsend & Schupp Company, 5 years with Schupp & Grochmal, LLC, and several years with United Technologies Corporation, and the Phoenix Insurance Company.

Mr. Schupp has held various positions in the securities industry, served on Boards of Securities Exchange advisory groups and is a past President of the Connecticut Investment Bankers Association. He is philanthropically active in his community, serving as President of the Granby, Connecticut Land Trust, a board member of the Granby Education Foundation, and an active fundraiser for the past 18 years on behalf of The Community Scholarship Association in memory of his son Dave, Jr.

Dave holds a B.S. in Business from The University of Hartford and is a member of the Board of Visitors of the Barney School of Business and serves as a University Regent.

Brian Totty, Ph.D.
President, Bicoastal Ventures

Dr. Totty is an entrepreneur and executive with 20 years of product development, business strategy, and organizational leadership experience. He is President of Bicoastal Ventures, a seed-stage venture catalyst firm in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Dr. Totty currently holds investment and non-investment advisory roles in 6 start-up business ventures. Previously, Brian was a strategic analyst for Foundation Capital, an early-stage venture capital firm in Menlo Park, California.

From 1996 to 2002, Brian was Founder, Vice President of Research & Development and General Manager of Inktomi Corporation, a pioneering internet infrastructure company. Prior to that, Brian held leadership positions at Silicon Graphics Computer Systems, Apple Computer's Advanced Technology Group, and several start-up ventures.

He holds a B.S. degree in Computer Science from M.I.T., a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a Master's in Public Administration from Harvard's Kennedy School. Brian is also an award-winning educator, research scientist, author of a highly-regarded guidebook to Internet technologies and inventor of 7 patents.

He has served on the founding executive team of the UIUC chapter of Habitat for Humanity. He also created and led the Free Widget Foundation, an international, non-profit software development foundation.

Raymond P. Welnicki
Vice President, Aetna Long Term Care Insurance

Mr. Welnicki is Head of Long Term Care Products and Services for Aetna Life Insurance Company. In this role, Ray oversees Aetna's portfolio of Long Term Care insurance products, assuring that they meet customer needs and equal or exceed Aetna's profitable growth targets. He joined Aetna in September, 2002.

Prior to joining Aetna, Mr. Welnicki was CEO of Dreamreacher, Inc., an Internet spin-out of Hartford Life Insurance Company focused on providing consumers with cutting-edge lifestyle and retirement planning tools. Before this, he was Senior Vice President and director of Strategic Operations at Hartford Life, Inc. In this position, Ray was responsible for evaluating and pursuing strategic opportunities for the company.

In the 1990s, Mr. Welnicki served as Senior Vice President and director of Hartford Life's Employee Benefits Division. Under his guidance, the division became one of the nation's premier Group Life & Disability insurance franchises. Ray centered the Disability insurance business on a ground-breaking "Abilities Assurance" theme that included sponsorship of athletes with disabilities, the National Theater of the Deaf, and an outward-bound type program for disabled clients.

Prior to joining The Hartford, Ray spent 19 years at Aetna in a variety of actuarial, strategic and product management roles including Head of Managed Care Product Development.

Ray has coached Little League baseball, been President of the local youth ice hockey organization and served on the Board of the Capital Area chapter of the American Heart Association.

Ray is a magna cum laude graduate of the College of Insurance in New York (now a part of St. John's University) with a B.S. degree in Actuarial Science. Ray is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries.
